Kathy Schwadel, a New York City native, wrote Grab Your Tiger: How 110 Women Made the First Move to Capture the Men of Their Dreams when the last of her living relatives, those who toasted her future nuptials at every holiday dinner, had passed on. It was time to face the fact that at age 46, she was still single and might remain that way the rest of her life. Then she had a light bulb moment: She'd spent three decades dating men only who approached her first. Why not flip the script and begin making the first move herself?
To her surprise, she uncovered a universe of quality men—and instantly she realized how antiquated thinking (it’s desperate to call a man first), and her own prejudices (if he can't walk over to me first, he must be lame), had misled her. She'd already experienced the shallowness of more practiced, aggressive types--those who easily made the rounds. But she discovered that shy men, the kind she'd always labeled 'weak', were anything but. They could be strong, driven and very exciting, and they were within her reach, all along.
So she challenged her fears and began initiating contact with men she’d have never met otherwise. She eventually clicked with a workout-focused, very cute fellow at her gym, began dating him, and a year and a half later, he proposed. She married, for the first time, just shy of her 50th birthday. To inspire other women to stop waiting and to make that first move themselves, she gathered 628 success stories, and selected the best ones for this new book.
Kathy graduated Barnard College, Columbia University, in 1976 and worked for eight years as an Editor and Marketing Director for Hearst Books. For nearly a decade, she directed the Marketing and Product Development of corporate health and safety guides at Positive Promotions and went on to create Promotional campaigns for Synchronal, a television Infomercial company.
Now 53, Kathy lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with her husband of four years, Peter, and a ficus tree named Phil. She and Peter also own a home in Merritt Island, FL where she is proud to be located not far from the Fawlty Towers hotel in Cocoa Beach. She applied for the position of manager, but lost out on the job in true John Cleese fashion for refusing to respond to the front desk bell.
Kathy speaks at singles events, women's groups and schools, and acts as a relationship coach on several dating websites. In her spare time, she is developing a book to coach middle aged women to pursue true love later in life, as she did.
Her company, Keen Publications, Inc. is the publisher of Keen on New York, Top-Rated Services, 2004 Ed., Grab Your Tiger, and over a dozen articles on relationships and dating.
